In the Footsteps of Matisse: South of France
July 2, 2022 - July 9, 2022$4950
I am delighted to announce we will be heading back to France in July 2022. I will again be hosting this fabulous painting retreat at the inspiring Villa Le Reve, the home of Henri Matisse in the medieval town of Vence on the French Rivera.
Henry Matisse lived at the Villa Le Reve from 1943 to 1948. He created a sensuous world, bringing to Vence all the objects without which he could not draw or paint – jugs, vases tables and chairs, shells, and fabrics. Matisse produced Yellow and Blue interior of 1946, Large Red Interior of 1948 and many important works there. The Villa offers an exceptional setting for artistic inspiration with its beautiful gardens and it is an easy ten minute walk into the historic centre of Vence.
This trip is a rare opportunity to work within these historic surrounds. You will be encouraged to develop up a body of working sketches and then progress to more sustained paintings ether in the studio at the villa or back on your home soil.
We will all meet in Nice where we will visit the Matisse and Chagall museums to whet your appetite and allow you to see some of the paintings that were actually painted from the rooms you will be staying in.
The Matisse Chapel is a five-minute walk from the villa. Called The Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence, it is a unique building which was designed and constructed by Henri Matisse, as a monument to the gratitude he felt towards his nurse Monique Bourgeois. It is a profound space which combines the artistic and the spiritual, and is abiding proof of Matisse’s genius.
We have a wonderful week of drawing and painting in the grounds of the villa or in the three indoor studios. We will visit Nice and the famous antique markets, see Matisse’s other house, take a dip in the ocean and lunch in one of the fabulous beach clubs. The beautiful old town of St Paul de Vence houses the Maeght Foundation – one of the best art collections in France. After a morning being inspired at the gallery will have lunch at La Colombe d’Or where Leger and Picasso used to dine and the walls are covered with original works
My interest in Matisse comes from his colour and form as one of the great masters of modernism “to have the opportunity to paint in the house that he lived and worked…. to see those same views is to be part of an amazing history.”
Suitable for all levels of experience.
