The Colours of Morocco: International Artist Adventure – Postponed

NEW DATES COMING SOON

I am delighted to announce an exotic 7 night, 8-day International Artists Adventure in May 2022 to the heart of Marrakech, Morocco as part of my new offering – The Wandering Artist

Morocco’s vibrancy, exoticism and colour, have long been a source of great inspiration for artists throughout history from Delacroix to Matisse and the Orientalists.

Join us on this amazing Art adventure to the heart of Marrakesh. We will venture into the dark, narrow alleyways of the Medina, with its endless mosaic of souks, alluring scents and brilliant colours, paint in perfumed gardens and dine in Jemaa el-Fna – a thousand year old carnival, with its dozens of food stalls, musicians, fortune-tellers, and snake charmers, all the while recording our memories with daily en plain air painting sessions under the guidance of Dominique Sutton.

After the chaos and heat of Marrakech we will head out to the quiet of the desert for a bit of barefoot luxury at La Pause. Here we will have time to focus on our painting with three days of uninterrupted creative time -or take a camel ride, swim in the pool or just relax and read your book.

Our Itinerary

Day 1.
You will be met at the airport by our driver who will deliver you safely to our Riad. This evening you will enjoy a welcome drink and dinner with Dominique and your fellow art adventurers at the Riad Olema.

Day 2.
This morning after breakfast, meet your local guide and set off on a tour of the Medina. We will meander through the bustling souks that are the lifeblood flowing through the city via the secret garden where we can stop and paint on our way to the famous Bahia Palace. The afternoon will be spent sketching with Dominique on the rooftop terrace of the Riad Olema with its beautiful vista over the city. At sunset we willed out to dinner at a very cool traditional Moroccan restaurant – Nomad.

Day 3.
Today we will head out to the Museum of contemporary African Art and then onto the home and museum of Yves St Laurent where we will stop for lunch. The afternoon will be spent drawing in the beautiful The Jardin Majorelle. This evening we will be taken on a gastronomic tour of the famous square Jemmaa el Fna. We’ll awaken the five senses as we dine with locals at the most popular food stalls in the market and sample local specialties. With our appetites satisfied we’ll soak up the night-time ambiance in the famous square: storytellers, bellydancers, and even dentists. All in the reassuring company of your local guide and hostess.

Day 4.
We will spend the morning drawing and painting at the Riad Olema. You have the afternoon off to paint, explore, shop or indulge in a traditional Moroccan ritual at a Hamman. Riad Olema has a wonderful spa on site or if you want to experience the full deal – The famous La Mamounia‘s treatments are pure bliss and there is a glorious pool. We will head out to dine at the famous El Fen for dinner where you can relax on the sofas and armchairs with a mojito, a grand piano surrounded by  palms, arresting artworks and a menu showcasing the best of Moroccan and European dishes.

Days 5 – 7.
Having spent the last few days exploring the chaos and heat of Marrakech we will head out to the quiet of the desert, for a stay at La Pause. A true haven of peace and a little bit of luxury. Re-born from a ruined house discovered on a desert island, a sort of an end of the world… carefully preserved for artists and true wild nature lovers. Here we will have time to focus on our painting with three days of uninterrupted creative time. In the mornings Dominique will lead guided lessons en plain air, then the afternoons are free to further your works, take a camel ride, swim in the pool or just relax and read your book.

Day 8.
On our final day we will gather in the morning for breakfast and a talk about all the wonderful experiences and have a look at the work we have managed to create. A transfer will then take us to the airport or Marrakech depending on your itinerary.

Accommodation

Riad Olema & Spa is an exclusive Riad with pools, spa and Hammam located in the very heart of the Marrakech’s ancient Medina at Bab Doukkala, and at 10 minutes walk from the famous Jemaa El Fna square. It has the feel of a beautiful, highly individual, private house, but the facilities of a boutique-hotel. Opened to the sky, patios bathed in light will delight you with their pools or fountains lined with olive and palm trees.

La Pause sits 30 km from Marrakesh, or, as it was referred to as in ancient times, the Marrakchi Desert, nestled in the arid Agafay Hills, a hidden oasis that runs along the Oued riverbeds and has exquisite views across the vast Moroccan wilderness. Nomadic tents are placed around the property, and simply yet beautifully designed lodges come equipped with extravagantly large beds with luxurious bedding, deep red Berber carpets, open fires, sofas, oil lamps and an indoor shower and bathroom. There’s a small and charming stone pool, camel and horse rides are available, sunset being the optimal time, then dinner under the stars while local musicians play as you eat. There is a heaven right here on earth.

Materials

A good sketchbook, Charcoal and pencils, ink, a watercolour block of paper, a watercolour/gouache wheel. Your favourite brushes, rags and a plastic container for water. Camera and notebook. Invest in some water brushes – these are small plastic brushes that you can fill with water and are great for walking and painting en plain air.

If you are painting – I would recommend watercolour, Gouache or Acrylics as they are probably easiest to travel with and are faster drying. The aim of the retreat is to make lots of notes, sketches and small paintings to use as a reference when you get home. Put everything in a clear Tupperware box as you can use the lid as a palette and it keeps everything secure in your luggage.
