Water/Sky

A symbol of hope, continuity, and connection

Inspired by the Greek goddess Nike — the embodiment of victory — Water/Sky celebrates the enduring spirit of achievement. Like her Roman counterpart Victoria, Nike represents triumph, pride, and the mysterious power that continues to inspire athletes today.

Standing eight metres high, this gleaming aluminium figure rises with one fist lifted skyward — capturing a timeless moment of honour, energy, and determination. The sculpture’s form and presence embody strength and movement, reflecting the vibrant spirit of Kai Tak Sports Park. Situated in the North Garden, an open space for leisure and community life, Water/Sky also pays tribute to the site’s transformation — from Kai Tak’s historic past to its present identity as a world-class sports precinct. The work honours Sir Ho Kai, whose visionary contributions helped shape Hong Kong’s modern development, including the Kai Tak Bund, The University of Hong Kong, Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, and Po Leung Kuk.

Across the sculpture’s surface, etched constellations and maps trace the evolution of Hong Kong through time. The shoulder bears a celestial map, symbolising navigation and guidance toward a bright future, while the inscription “Gratitude” pays homage to those who paved the way. As daylight moves across its surface, shifting reflections and shadows transform the surroundings into living maps of light — echoing the movement of a sundial. These transient patterns invite visitors on a journey through time, from past to present to future.

By merging art, history, and environment, Water/Sky serves as both monument and inspiration — a meeting point between water and sky, heritage and innovation, earth and stars.
